Mourinho gets Man United board’s backing

Manchester United’s Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho still has the club’s backing despite Monday’s 3-0 home defeat by Tottenham.

United have lost two of their first three Premier League games for the first time since 1992-93.

However, senior figures at Old Trafford are convinced Mourinho can turn the situation around.

Mourinho, 55, remained on the pitch to applaud fans after the game at Old Trafford and praised them in TV interviews.

Asked about United’s defensive problems in the post-match news conference, he raised three fingers and said: “Do you know what this means? Yes, it means 3-0, but it also means three Premier Leagues – and I won more Premier Leagues alone than the other 19 managers put together. Three for me. Two for them.”

As he got up to leave, Mourinho told a journalist: “Respect! Respect! Respect man!”

The Portuguese last week said had “no problem” with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, amid reports that they have fallen out.

Mourinho took over at United in 2016, winning the League Cup and the Europa League in his first season in charge, when they finished sixth in the Premier League.

United were runners-up to Manchester City last season.

Transfer: Lacazette to leave Arsenal before August 31

Arsenal striker, Alexandre Lacazette is seriously considering leaving the club, before the August 31 deadline for European clubs.

Le10Sport reports that Lacazette might leave the Emirates as he is yet to start a game in the Premier League under new manager, Unai Emery.

Emery plays with one striker in his current system and prefers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

It is not certain if Arsenal will sanction the transfer, as clubs in England cannot buy players until January.

Lacazette scored 17 goals during his debut season with the Gunners, after arriving from Ligue 1 side, Lyon.

Transfer: Real Madrid set to bring back attacker

Sevilla president, Pepe Castro, has claimed that Real Madrid are ready to hijack their attempt to sign Mariano Diaz from Lyon.

The striker, who left Real Madrid for Lyon in 2017, was expected to move to Sevilla in a club-record deal worth between €30million and €40m.

But on Monday, it emerged that Real were ready to activate a first refusal clause agreed in the deal, that saw Mariano swap the Bernabeu for the Groupama Stadium last year.

Los Blancos sold the 25-year-old for around €8m, but included an option to re-sign the striker by matching offers from other clubs. They also kept 35% of the player’s rights.

“We are an ambitious club and things like that happen when you want players of this level. It is true that Madrid had a preferential option and told us that they will exercise it but we still do not have the player’s notification,” Castro told reporters on Tuesday.

“The player told us he wanted to play at Sevilla, that he wanted to play in the Spanish league and, above all, that he wanted to play in a team who have won so many Europa League titles as Sevilla. He has not given an answer and we are waiting for his answer. You can guess [his decision] but we do not have a reply from the player who is the one who is able to say one thing or another.

“Sevilla have acted as we had to act. We have reached an agreement with Lyon. The footballer told us he would only play for Sevilla. They [Real Madrid] have considered to exercise their option.”

Rohr declares desire to win African Nations Cup

Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr has declared that his big ambition is to win next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroun, reports footballlive.ng.

Although his team still has the qualifiers to prosecute, starting with their September 7 battle away to Seychelles, Rohr is looking ahead to the main event itself and stressed that his target is to pick the trophy.

Three-time champions, Nigeria, which missed the 2015 and 2017 editions, trail leaders, Libya and South Africa by three points in Group E of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Rohr affirmed that he has already told his players that they could win Cameroon 2019 with the right mentality, determination and adherence to tactics, all of which, he says, he would impact on them in his unfolding build-up programme.

He added: “The last time Nigeria won the African Cup Nations in 2013, I was the coach of Niger Republic.”

“The team hasn’t qualified for two successive Nations Cups. We want to ensure that this team qualifies for Cameroon 2019.

“If that happens we will try to qualify from our group at the competition proper and try to take it step by step to the final.

The stage is set for the biggest battles in African table tennis. 22 teams, including giants, Nigeria and Egypt, have been confirmed for the International Table Tennis Federation’s (ITTF) African Championships, which will hold in Mauritius from September 3 to 9.

Aside being an avenue to determine the best teams, men and women, in the continent, the championship will also serve as the qualifier for the 2019 ITTF World Team Cup.

On Monday, African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) President, Khaled El-Salhy, revealed that two teams (men and women) will represent the continent at the World Team Cup slated for November 2019.

He said, “The Mauritius championship will also serve as the qualification for the next World Team Cup to be held in November 2019 in Tokyo, which is a test event for Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 in Japan.”

Apart from Nigeria, Egypt and the hosts, the other countries expected in Mauritius are Algeria, Gabon, Angola, Burkina Faso, Congo Brazzaville, Cameroun, Somalia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Madagascar, Togo, Benin Republic, Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa, Djibouti, Comoros, Libya, Eritrea and Congo DRC.

“Yes I am so happy in following up the expected good number of entries in-spite of the received information from National Associations, hoping that all could do it and come with us to Mauritius soon,” the ATTF boss said.

Khaled El-Salhy said the Mauritius championship has provided the opportunity for ATTF to reconsider its new strategic plan for the next few years. “This time we have a special ITTF/ATTF Forum “Table Tennis For All For Life” holding from September 3 to 4 in which we are planning to conduct our new continental Strategic Plan for the coming years of 2018 to 2024.

“ATTF is looking to conduct a special Strategic Plan satisfying the needs of all African Associations with a great concentration for the activities through Regions in the future in which more small nations could come with less cost.

“As per experience we have very successful events in Mauritius (i.e. African Seniors Championship in 1998 & 2004 plus African Juniors & Cadet Championship in 2015) with a very fantastic performance from Mauritius Table Tennis Association (MTTA), thus I am expecting to have a very special event as one of the top professional organization in Africa.”
