Sporting demand compensation for Martins
Sporting Lisbon are demanding compensation after Gelson Martins left the club to join Atletico Madrid. The 23-year-old forward is one of nine players to quit Sporting following an attack by fans at their training ground in May.
As a result, Martins was a free agent and on Wednesday the Portugal international signed a five-year deal at Spanish giants Atletico.
But Sporting are unhappy with the LaLiga club’s “unacceptable behaviour” in Martins’ transfer and want FIFA to act.
A statement on Sporting’s official website read: “The board of directors of Sporting Clube de Portugal Futebol SAD decided unanimously to present... FIFA with a compensation claim to the athlete and the club, and request... sports sanctions to both.”
